This took me a year to finish

I didn’t work on it continuously for a year obviously…

[pictures will be uploaded in a bit, sorry!]

fancy dinner

James got a gift certificate for dinner for two at West. It’s one of Vancouver’s more expensive restaurants. We got the tasting menus with wine pairings – seven courses for me and five for him, each with its own glass of wine (well, champagne with the first, port with the last, wine with the middle ones). Crazy. I was nicely tipsy. The bill was $465. It was good, but not something I’d ever spend that much of my own money on.

Thursday the office is going out for another fancy lunch. I’m getting spoiled.

This morning I was late and just brought my oatmeal with me and tried to cook it in the microwave here. It totally boiled over and made a huge mess. Had to stop halfway through to clean up. It’s almost done now and damnit I’m hungry.

back home

I had a pretty fun time in Portland. I enjoyed limited participation in, and more extensive spectating of, the advertised 60 hours of krunk. Including from my travelling companion, who fit his 60 hours into 3. Here’s a representative one of his lines: “You know what I lost last night, besides my dignity? My passport.”

Seriously though, it was fun. I enjoy wandering around unfamiliar cities alone.

Weekend plans

I’m biking to Bellingham on Wednesday and taking the train to Portland Thursday morning. Back Monday, I think. I hope I have a good time.

Today I:

- got my learner’s permit (with the minimum score allowed! sweet!)
- forgot my lunch
- had an excellent potato-pistachio soup with pretty much the best falafel ever
- learned a brief history of the Japanese stock market
- yawned excessively
- examined spreadsheets for errors
- talked to a couple professors at University of Guelph

back home

Busy week. I came home Monday (New Years Eve). Got up at 4:30 EST, had a crappy flight, stopped in Minneapolis, and had an even CRAPPIER flight since I always get sick when I’m on the rag. Throwing up on an airplane is embarrassing. Lucky the second row from the back was empty; it afforded me the opportunity to lie down and gave me excellent proximity to the lavatory.

Parties were kinda blah. We went to two of them… both friends of James’ cousin and I really didn’t know anyone. Also wasn’t feeling too great. The cousin wanted to stay much later than I did.

I am back at work and it is boring. I was supposed to go snowboarding after work with James and his cousins yesterday, but they kind of screwed up the plans, and it ended with them going and me not. It’s just as well since it was raining on the mountain anyway.

Finally got my statement of intent for U Manitoba written yesterday. Today I am going to work on my CV… not even sure what to put on it, but I’ll give it a good try. I know I got some scholarships during my undergrad but I don’t remember what they were called, and I feel kind of silly about that.

yay, vacation?

My mom had a vitrectomy (eye surgery) today to repair a macular hole. They suck out half your eyeball fluid and inject a gas bubble. She has to stay face down for 10-14 days so the gas bubble will stay at the back of her eye and push the macula back against the retina. Dad is stressed and frustrated. We got her special bed attachment all set up… not the most comfy thing ever, but it does the trick.

I baked pumpkin bread today and I’m baking regular bread as well. And I’m going to make truffles today too.

Yesterday my dad took me to the Abbey of Gethsemani. I would have liked to stay longer and have a good quiet day, but he had things to do so we stayed for two hours. It was nice to visit though.

merry christmas eve!

I’m off to see the fam in Kentucky for a week.

yay!

James is home from Korea which is great since I missed him a lot.

Also, the metallurgy lab sends us a nice Christmas basket full of delicious chocolate every year, which we received this morning. The two main perks of corporate bullshit are office lunches (2 hour lunch at a posh restaurant on someone else’s dime? yes please) and Christmas baskets. Yesterday’s had two bottles of wine in it. The one earlier this week from the surveying outfit wasn’t too bad… not much for the vegans, but I snagged some almonds and also the basket which was very nice.

I think I’ll go have another Mint Meltie now.

headache

Winter so far has been strange for Vancouver. Lots of cold, clear days. That means icy roads, and I bike to work every day. Today was my first ice-related crash, and now I have a bruised hip and elbow and a headache. I think I had a pretty good winning streak though. Plenty of my friends have been wiping out all the time.

Uh, this week I decided that I will apply to University of Manitoba and also a joint Guelph/Waterloo program. I am thinking about not applying at Calgary. The professor I would have picked as my first choice for a supervisor is retiring. Second and third choices won’t be taking on students next year. The rest of the faculty really don’t have similar research interests at all. Manitoba’s deadline is Jan 15 though and I have to get my ass in gear, srsly.

James is in Korea for the next week.
