I think I used up all my words

In the past few months I’ve written many many thousands of words, just not here. Yesterday I handed in my dissertation, which in a fit of creativity I titled “A Review of Literacy Practices and Critique of an Evaluation of Ugandan Adult Literacy Development Programmes”.  I feel a bit out to sea now; it’s been [...]

UK Student Visa, aka PBS Tier 4, aka The Devil’s Work

Applying for a UK student visa is a process fraught with bureaucracy and idiocy.  I mailed mine today (99% sure everything is correct) and so I’m going to write a little bit about the process. First, if you live in Canada or the US (and possibly other countries, I don’t know) you have to go [...]

Abrupt change of subject

As of now, this blog is gonna be about going back to school and being an expat. Why? Because I’ve been accepted to the MA Social Anthropology of Development program, at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. In other words: Moving to London. In two months. I’m gonna be BUSY.

Semi-annual Eastward Migration: Complete

James and I have just returned from our vacation, visiting family in the eastern US.  We flew from Seattle to Washington, DC, where we rented a car and made a loop northward to PA, south to NC (via the Blueridge Parkway), east to the Outer Banks, and north again to DC.  Without further ado, a [...]

My new favourite store

Well, it’s not that new; it’s been my favourite store since we moved into this house.  Behold: That’s Gourmet Warehouse, and it’s two blocks from my house.  Dangerous, I know.  They have all kinds of amazing stuff here… cookware, bakeware, glassware, knifeware and any other kind of -ware you can imagine plus some pretty cool [...]

Also: Return from brief hiatus

There’s been a lull in posting recently and it’s partly due to a last minute trip to Australia.  It’s not very common to go to Sydney on a whim of course, but that’s not what we intended to do.  Our plan was Hong Kong – James’ aunt lives there and his cousin in Korea was [...]

back home

I had a pretty fun time in Portland. I enjoyed limited participation in, and more extensive spectating of, the advertised 60 hours of krunk. Including from my travelling companion, who fit his 60 hours into 3. Here’s a representative one of his lines: “You know what I lost last night, besides my dignity? My passport.” [...]

Weekend plans

I’m biking to Bellingham on Wednesday and taking the train to Portland Thursday morning. Back Monday, I think. I hope I have a good time.

back home

Busy week. I came home Monday (New Years Eve). Got up at 4:30 EST, had a crappy flight, stopped in Minneapolis, and had an even CRAPPIER flight since I always get sick when I’m on the rag. Throwing up on an airplane is embarrassing. Lucky the second row from the back was empty; it afforded [...]

yay, vacation?

My mom had a vitrectomy (eye surgery) today to repair a macular hole. They suck out half your eyeball fluid and inject a gas bubble. She has to stay face down for 10-14 days so the gas bubble will stay at the back of her eye and push the macula back against the retina. Dad [...]
