Not a good sign

I was making banana bread today and saw a little tiny inchworm inching across my recipe card. I don’t know where he came from. I am especially paranoid since I found bugs in my flour last week and had to throw the whole bag out. 10 kg and I hadn’t used more [...]

FREEDOM!

Today I am going to mail my last student loan payment. This will make me debt-free. LOVE!
I am eating some veggie curry I made, and it is STUPID hot.

Caturday!

My favourite day.
Today I am canning beets, carrots, and corn. I had the tastiest dinner last night and more of the same for lunch cause it was just so good.
Kale goma-e: Rinse the kale, take out the centre bit, and dry. Fry it in a few drops of sesame oil along with [...]

Worst cake ever!

I got up early this morning because I said I’d make some cake for a coworker’s birthday. She and my boss are both celiacs so I bought some gluten-free flour. That package, and my package of vital wheat gluten flour (i.e. nothing BUT gluten) are both from Bob’s Red Mill, same size, same [...]

That was a close one

After a little confrontation with my roommate (where I finally got the pressure cooker working and, when 20 of 30 cooking minutes had elapsed, she came out in her nightgown and asked if I could turn it off and just do it in the morning since the hissing was keeping her up and I flatly [...]

Here's what I did with my tomato sauce.

I phoned my mom and found that you are supposed to put in baking soda or sugar ANYWAY, so I put in some of both. I tested one bowl with liquid smoke and one with curry. My roommate preferred the former, I preferred the latter. So I added both to the main [...]

oh noes!

I scorched my tomato sauce. So I’ve been looking for remedies on the interwebs. So far the suggestions I’ve found are as follows, so I don’t forget them:

add some peanut butter
the raw potato trick
tie some yeast in a little cloth bag and let it sit in the sauce for a few minutes
baking [...]

full tummy

Did you know that tomato sauce takes a long time to make? cause I didn’t. James came over and helped me cut up a big box of tomatoes and they sat there simmering for a long long time. It was really nice of him to help, kind of makes up for the [...]

magical fruit

I got 10 lbs of beans at the farmer’s market today. So I canned 12 pints (first time doing any pressure canning, it was super easy) and the rest are in the dehydrator.
And I got 24 lbs of tomatoes too. The guy was super nice, he’s French and he’s all “Don’ worree! [...]

Continuing with the domesticity

In the past couple weeks I have canned:

5 quarts of dill pickles
6 half pints blueberry jam
6 half pints blackberry jam
3 half pints corncob jelly
5 half pints apple cider jelly
7 quarts peaches

And I have a 26 oz. bottle full of mushy peach castoffs turning into booze.
Right now I’m drinking hot [...]
