After a little confrontation with my roommate (where I finally got the pressure cooker working and, when 20 of 30 cooking minutes had elapsed, she came out in her nightgown and asked if I could turn it off and just do it in the morning since the hissing was keeping her up and I flatly refused), my tomato sauce finished processing. It takes quite a while for the pressure to drop, so I’m puttering around my room and staying up much later than usual. A minute ago I finally heard the air vent drop and went to take off the pressure regulator so it can cool for another ten minutes (sidenote: it takes a long time to cool completely, the food in the jars will keep boiling for up to 45 minutes after you take it out). Just as I was doing that I heard the oven make that soft whoofing noise that a gas oven makes when it’s lighting. Oven had been on all evening and just happened to relight at that particular moment (another sidenote: unless you are broiling, the burner doesn’t stay lit the whole time it is “on”). I don’t know who turned it on, I sure wasn’t baking anything.
So I’ve averted TWO disasters this evening! shazam!
