Definitely going to take the train. And James is definitely coming with me. Here’s how it breaks down:
Seattle - Chicago leg: “Superliner Roomette” (basically two chairs and a table, folds down into a bunk that takes up the whole room). Includes meals. 45 hours.
Chicago - Indianapolis leg: Coach seats (bit bigger than airline business class seats). 5 hours.
Indianapolis - Louisville: Greyhound bus. 2 hours.
Grand total for two adults round trip: $1236. Compare that to $2300 for the same thing on the Canadian, but for ONE PERSON. Though I’ve heard that Amtrak isn’t nearly as nice. I guess it shouldn’t be, for four times cheaper.
The only shitty part is getting into Indianapolis at 1:30 am and leaving at 4:30. Three hours in a bus station in the middle of the night? Whatever, we’re gonna see the whole country for dirt cheap without actually doing any work such as driving. I’m excited. Especially since James is coming ^_^ Last year he was going to but couldn’t get a flight - his dad’s a pilot so he flies for dirt cheap, but standby - so during the holidays, unlikely he’s going anywhere.
We’re also going to visit a Trappist monastery best known for being where Thomas Merton was a monk for 20 years, until he was accidentally electrocuted while visiting Thailand in 1968.
