a bit of embarrassment

What’s the proper protocol for leaving a restaurant without ordering anything?

James and I went out with his cousin to a restaurant near his house last night. We’d been there for breakfast a few times and found it quite good and not unreasonably priced, so on the way in last night we didn’t bother to look at the dinner menu posted by the door.

All the entrees were between $20 and $25 and we didn’t feel like paying that much, but as we were discussing whether or not we should go the waitress came along with a basket of bread. In the end we shared an appetizer between the three of us because Shawna and I felt that we couldn’t make a quick enough escape to avoid the embarrassment.

But really, what’s the proper thing to say in a situation like that?
