More about old church ladies

At church yesterday. J (who’s at least in her 70s) is talking to me over lunch after church, and when she comes back from getting seconds she stops before sitting down and leans over to look at my left ear.

“Is that a hole?” she asks. I assume she’s talking about my orbital. “Which, this? Yeah, it’s…”

“No, the other one. My grandson has his ears like that, does it go all the way through?”

“Oh, yeah it does.” I took my plug out to show her. It’s only 0g, so I dunno why she noticed, most people assume it’s just a normal earring.

“Well!” she said, leaning in a little bit. “Is that ever neat! K [her husband], look, she’s got big holes in her ears just like S does! Isn’t that a neat idea?” She leaned over and showed me her own ears, a fairly typical example of old-lady earlobes. “See, my eyesight’s getting bad and sometimes I can’t see to put my earrings in. Maybe I should try that!”

K said he thought it was a good idea, that way they wouldn’t fall out so easily. “But,” I said, “Mine actually fall out pretty easily, because the holes get too loose.”

He laughed. “You need bigger earrings then!” I agreed.

“Aha!” he said, “Now I know why I see kids with such big holes in their ears these days!”
