So yesterday – my first time at Critical Mass. Not entirely sure how I feel about it, I think it's a really good ideal, and though it's bad PR in some ways, it's also helpful in other ways to achieve more awareness of cycling. I mean, there were about 500 of us. Suppose each and every one of us was driving a car. Which causes more congestion? There seemed to be a lot of supporters too. Motorists seemed evenly divided between frustrated and curious, and there were one or two that were really mad. Obviously it's no good as one single tactic, but I know that many people devote a lot of their time to advocacy in other arenas, and this is a once-a-month celebration sort of thing. And I do have to say, it WAS really fun. And felt really nice that I don't have to worry about cars not seeing me, swerving into me, opening doors in front of me, etc.
After that I engaged in public nudity for the first time as well! haha. We ended up at English Bay, and a couple guys who had swim trunks went in, and another two guys stripped off and jumped in as well. I was so sweaty I wanted to swim too, but didn't want wet clothes and I was shy to get naked. I figured if one more did it then I would too… and then TWO more people stripped and jumped in. So I joined the bandwagon. Eventually there were about 8 or 9 of us swimming around naked. After we got out the lifeguard came over to scold us, but midway through the fingerwagging, he noticed that one of the naked guys was an old friend and they started chatting it up. haha.
Bikes and nudity are fun.
