first day at work

Working at a gas station gives you eleventy billion things to keep your eye on. One lady comes in to pay for gas and a chocolate bar, separately, and the girl with me (Amanda) explains it's common because they write off their gas for work.

Next guy comes in, he's got $40 in one hand and $9 in the other and wants gas and smokes. I assume he wants to pay separately, since smokes are $9, so I was trying to figure out how to do that when I noticed the lady from pump #4 driving off, and I didn't see her come in to pay. So the guy who wants to pay for smokes gets frustrated with me because I don't understand how to pre-pay diesel , and I'm confused whether he wants to pay separately, and can't ask Amanda since she's now on the phone with the cops.

Eventually the impatient guy says, “no! this $9 isn't for smokes, it was just lying here!” The lady that I thought gassed & ran had really just dashed in, plopped it on the counter, and back out again without saying anything to me, or me noticing it.

Amanda was really nice and telling me how it's good I noticed, and got the license number, and better safe than sorry, and all that stuff, but I still felt retarded.
